Well I'll never forget that day I met my little felon out of Santa Fe. She's chain-gangin' on the side of the road, picking up trash from here to San Antone. Jumpsuit Jenny - she's ornery as a feral cat. Better be careful with that kitty, she'll get you like a heart attack. Well, I followed that state bus home, pulled over and got my lawyer on the telephone. I told him, "Hey Buddy, wind, sleet or hail - you get the money, man and throw her bail" Jumpsuit Jenny - she's ornery as a feral cat. Better be careful with that kitty, she'll get you like a heart attack. - She came at me with her eyes ablaze - First taste of life she'd had in days - She must be hidin' that heart of gold - Come on Jenny don't you lose control. First thing she did when I got her home - stripped off that orange jumpsuit and began to roam. From room to room, checking out every door. I knew I had that felon when she hollered for more. Jumpsuit Jenny - she's ornery as a feral cat. Better be careful with that kitty, she'll get you like a heart attack.

Creole Mama 05:18
I was down in Louisiana, north of Baton Rouge. I caught a hankerin' for some French-Cajun loving And a little hundred proof I took a chance on this Creole with crazy golden eyes She offered me a glass of warm malt liquor - taste like formaldehyde Stop messin' around, my time has come One more drink - one more taste of that voodoo rum This side of town ain't safe for me Come on, girl - grab your things and let's merrily Old town Slidell - on the outskirts of Hell We walked along the bayou; summer-thickened air I couldn't take my eyes off that creole's tied up ebony hair I spied an old cabana and I felt my breathing ease Caught my boot on an old grave marker - wondered why I didn't care Well I staggered on, but I couldn't run That last drink; that last taste of her voodoo rum Caught from behind, mouth full of blood No more fight, face down in Mississippi mud I'll fight the tide - headlong, head strong, but I won't be back in time I woke up cold and hungry - angry by degrees This big ol' boy with a mouth full of Beech-Nut welcomed me to Tennessee I spit my grits-n-gravy; cursed her up-and-down He just smiled with those crazy golden eyes and I figured I'd just back on down I ain't messin' around, my time has come One last chance - let me end what I should never begun If it's fight-or-flight, well I'm on the run Time is nigh: Something wicked this way comes I'm Northern bound - first road outta town

CH: Hey Hey Whiskey won’t you take a bow Come on in – tell us how you never meant for any harm to come Hey Hey Whiskey look what you’ve done V1- An awkward girl – shy of seventeen She’d rather be alone – preferred unseen Her first taste of liquor was her old man’s Jim Beam And she slept in peace that night with no dreams V2- She was never far from her new found friend Oh they’d laugh, they’d cry, they’d condescend One day she packed her suitcase and she was gone without a word Left her old man to drink in fear for his girl CH V3- She quit her job, dropped out of school Living on the streets, invisible First time a man paid her for what she thought was love She died inside, no one to trust BR: She never gave herself a chance to grow Into the woman she knew lived within her soul The man that took her mother had been drinking all day One last trip to the liquor store, took her life away CH w/ steel lead over second CH V4- She still drank to ease the pain Lashed out at the numbness with cocaine She OD’d the first time smoking methamphetamine She and Jim – they swore next time to get clean BR- They fell into a cycle of abuse He’d only hit her when she drank or she used But the last time was different and she bled out on the floor She died alone on a Tuesday night – so tired, scared, and cold Hey Hey Whiskey won’t you take a bow Come on in – tell us how you never meant for any harm to come Hey Hey Whiskey look what you’ve done

VI: There’s something ‘bout September – you just can’t feel old Singing along to songs about freedom – turnin’ down Cemetery Road Well we all met up in Louisiana Drove south across Lake Pontchartrain J.D. and Becky makin’ out in the backseat – I’m jealous, but I can’t complain (x2) CH: Cause we’re all headed down to the river We’ll be drinking – the time of our lives Good friends, white lies told around the fire – it’s the essence of an innocent time VII: Sun comes up real early – this time of year It’s 85 at 9 in the morning – Heaven help us as we carry down the gear I grab my lights and my whiskey My cooler of franks and beer J.D. and Becky holdin’ hands by the water – dogs barking, everybody’s here As another summer sunset nears *CH, steel/gtr over CH, Intro VIII: I can barely remember – as my yellow faded memories turn We were young and living in the minute No worries, no lessons yet to learn We drank and we danced that evening - of passing time we were unaware JD wonders whatever became of Becky – and for a moment can smell that summer air Feel his fingers running through her hair… CH x2, Outro

Tell me why – why should I come back to you After all – all the things you put me through Did you really want to hurt me - knock me down the way you done? You left me hangin’ on Will you take my name – or will you realize You’re the one to blame – for my broken-hearted life Tell me all – all the things you’ve done for me When you know – know my lovin’ isn’t cheap I’m spending money – like I never did on you Cause she gives me everything Have you seen – seen the one I’ve taken on Well she’s young – she’s got me feeling strong (That’s right) I met your sister – she’s prettier than you And I’ll teach her everything

Hey Friend 04:43
Hey Friend – Why’re you here tonight? I should be working a late night shift up at Harlan Light Hey Friend – That should come as no surprise You’re the one that I was covering for – when you asked me last Friday night Hey Friend – What’d you have in mind? We’ve been running ‘round since kids, but there’s a fine line Hey Friend – I’d give my life for yours If you’re here for my woman, son – I’ll drop you with no remorse You better think about the afterlife – if you’re gonna make a stand You can see that we’re together, Son – I ain’t forcing her hand One more step and I will send you to the promised land Hey Friend – How’s this going to play? You can crawl back to your truck and live another day But Friend – If I ask you one more time I’m coming at you with a 2-by-4 And beat your ass across the county line

Excuse Me 04:48
You don’t like the way I sing country - You say my blues are a little too loud That I ain’t ever set foot in Texas - I’m not good enough for your Tractor Tavern crowd It’s true, I’ve never been to Texas. I ain’t seen Austin, or that Alamo town But I spent my summers in the Carolines, on the banks of the Albemarle Sound So, Excuse me if I got it wrong I like to drink – and dance – I like carryin’ on I wasn’t looking for trouble when I wrote this song So excuse me if I got it wrong I was born in Northern California - I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Spent some time above the Humboldt line - gettin’ high and learning how to play 20 years of playing bars and nightclubs Any roadhouse I could sing for my pay Then up to Seattle where the rain is king - I know Hank didn’t do it this way So, Excuse me if I got it wrong I like to drink – and dance – I like carryin’ on I wasn’t looking for trouble when I wrote this song So excuse me if I got it wrong I’ll always look back on Carolina – Catfish Hunter and the Charlie Daniels Band Uncle Donald and Denny – may they rest in peace Taught a city boy to love that southern land The trailers, the dirt, and the whiskey - Chain lightning turning night into day Big block Hemis and a Hertford girl… That’s my country, and I’ll sing it my way

Parking Lot 05:27
I dropped my baby in a parking lot Cause I had somewhere else to go I’d given her everything I was gonna give But that woman just want more You wouldn’t listen – wouldn’t shut your mouth Or you’d-a heard I’s bustin’ out I bring you fire cause you’ve turned to ice Open up – recognize You’re gonna lose this time You don’t believe me – I’d drive away Don’t think I can bear to be away for long You must be higher than you’ve ever been Cause Sugar - Sugar, you wrong Time and time, lord I’ve done my share Don’t get crazy – scratching and pulling hair She’s up and at me with a switchblade knife I break a bottle of Olde English Ice You’re gonna lose this time En Garde!! Cut and bloody – chipped a tooth or two You’re gonna want to put some ice on that, baby It’s looking a little raw You fall in my arms, like on the night we met Knocked out cold in the back of a pool hall You know I hate you, but I love you more Called you every name – went and learned some more And if someone dare raise their voice your way Come and get me – we’ll make ‘em pay
